Finished… I hope
I am tentatively excited to share this piece with you. Tentative because it’s so difficult not to find a million things that need fixing. Excited because this piece has been in my head for a long time and I am happy to put it out in the world. This piece was created for the Faith Matters Foundation’s Restore conference in September. I don’t paint tons of religious art, so when I do you can be sure it is a very tender subject for me. Okay. Drumroll…. (P.S. Keep reading after f

In Progress
I’m going to be candid… I’ve had a painting in my mind for over a year. But this painting requires a totally different style than my usual faire. I am feeling all sorts of insecurity about creating what is in my head when I do not have practice making it happen in this new way! Things that are different: Using acrylic paint (I rarely do, but this isn’t totally unusual for me). Softer brushstrokes Softer lines (normally I paint with very hard lines between elements) A building

Winter Birds
Winter is a time I think of desolation — all my flowers are asleep and the grass is brown and matted from the weight of snow. Blue sky days feel few and far between and even when the sun is shining, there is no warmth to bring joy. As November hustles on and winter is fast approaching, I wanted to focus on the beauty of winter . I wanted to remind myself that there are things to which one may look forward. To help myself, I chose to paint some birds that live in my state, Ut

A Night Like Any Other
This year I am participating in an art show entitled Alternativity at The Compass Gallery in Provo, Utah . This show is focused on expanding the expected aesthetic of Christmas. I chose to create a painting of the Nativity story, but I wanted to do it in a unique way. I did this through several elements. I chose to create this painting with cut paper elements. I painted small details and then cut them out and pasted them into the scene. If you’ve seen my The House that Baba Y

Post-market to-dos
Before the most recent market in which I participated, I took nice pictures of everything. I was rolling around on the ground with my DSLR camera trying to get the best lighting and angle of all my work and cards. I was very sweaty and tired by the end. I didn’t realize how much work I had available! It was my intention to get those pictures up after the market for any work that hadn’t found a home. But. We went on vacation instead. So, now that unpacking is done, resting has

Undulate
I think undulate may be one of my favorite words ever. I love words that feel like they mean… if you know what I mean. Jellyfish are so intriguing and a little bit magical. This is a painting of an Atlantic Sea Nettle Jellyfish. They’re really cool and are kind of their very own ecosystem. Crabs ride on top of them, little fish swim amongst their tentacles eating the leftovers, and the Jellyfish even protect bay oysters. Enjoy! Atlantic Sea Nettle Acrylic on board 24” by 12”

On Spiders
Rubber smudge on the wall Of my basement bedroom Where a shoe bounced off The body of a spider Who dared to intrude The squidge of tissue As daddy-knight-in-armor says, “Goodnight sweet prince” And slays the spider dragon The whir of a Dustbuster As grandma slurps up One of a thousand little spiders Skulking around her house And then the thunk thunk thunk When grandma releases the spiders Trapped in the machine Back outside Into her paradise The pinch of fear as A terrifyingl

The Quetzal Bird
Hey, and happy Monday afternoon! Summer is winding down if the sunrise after 6am is any indication. I don’t think I am even a little bit ready for the coming cold. So, I will deny the approaching school year and eventual weather shift by focusing on things that feel summer-y. So… what feels more summer-y than the vibrant plumage of a tropical bird ? Not much! I can just picture this gorgeous bird gliding through the trees and landing to eat baby avocados or little, skitterin
