Springville Museum of Art

Updated: Nov 15, 2023

Here in Utah County, there is a historic art museum -- the Springville Museum of Art. Having art in this museum has become a star for which many local artists reach. While there is a permanent collection and visiting/short term exhibits, there are two major shows open for submissions (one in the spring [the Spring Salon] and one in the fall [the Spiritual and Religious Art Show]).

I have been rejected (well, my work has, but it certainly feels more personal) several times. I submitted two pieces again this fall and, to my joy and amazement, my piece Prince of Peace was accepted. I am thrilled.

Last night was the opening reception of the Spiritual and Religious Art Show. For two hours artists and art enthusiasts mingled and viewed the show. There were so many people and the show was curated and hung beautifully. Every wall had beautiful, diverse pieces that celebrate the varied views and experiences of spirituality in our state.

I always like to return another time, as it is quite crowded. I appreciate so much meeting new artists or meeting artists of whom I am in awe. However, for the sake of the art, I like to come and take in each piece slowly and thoughtfully.

My piece is hanging just down the two stairs leading into a red-painted room. Tall windows look out over the lawn and reflect the art and light inside. On one long, windowless wall hang some of the largest pieces of the show. Smack dab in the center is a beautiful, circular piece surrounded in a thick, gold frame. In this painting is a spoonbill and a vase of flowers. It is striking and full of light colors. Directly to the right, contrasting in a rectangular, black frame, is my Prince of Peace.

Walking into a historical museum which I have come to see as almost a Holy Grail and seeing my work hang on the wall was an incredible experience. Well-established, professional artists who feel so far above me have had, and currently have, their work hanging. How can I?! But I do and I am so honored. This is real!

So, here is my accepted work: Prince of Peace, hanging on its red wall.
