Spooky?

Updated: Apr 15

I've started a new piece in preparation for an Art Stroll at the beginning of September. Featured is a tombstone that is inspired by some in New Orleans cemeteries.

Normally, I really hate spooky things. I like Halloween, but I only like the whimsical and magical and cutesy aspects. Gore, scary movies, horror... not for me.

What about you?

Dead bodies seriously terrify me, and I hate walking around cemeteries. As I was starting this painting, however, I felt a slight shift in my perspective. There is beauty in being enveloped by the earth and returning the nutrients and particles with which the earth nourished you back to the earth to continue the cycle.

A few months ago we were talking on my Instagram about cremation versus burial. I always planned to be buried. However, I can see the positivity in speeding up the composition process, and I feel I am leaning that direction. Especially if I can become part of a tree.

But! How cool would it be to be discovered by an archaeologist in nine hundred years?!

So, here is a picture of my new painting in progress. Enjoy!

A finger is next to this painting to show how small the gravestone pictured is. This is a closeup of a work in progress. It is a pale grey headstone painted to look like mossy stone with a cross on top. There is also the beginnings of a tiny skull at the base of the gravestone on the left and a raven perched on the top right curve.
