Glass Slippers

It interests me to consider how there is a Cinderella story in folktales around the world. Did somoeone travel around telling the tale but altering it for the area? Is wanting to be lifted out of poverty and rescued by a man of means via shoes somehow a universal, innate wish by women all over? Did the tale slowly spread and get changed because of language variations?

The Cinderella trope is certainly popular, even if no shoes are involved in the story. Just look at Twilight by Stefanie Meyer… it’s definitely a Cinderella tale.

I am excited to show you my little glass slippers. The photo was professionally captured by David Hawkinson.

I drew and painted these glass slippers before cutting them out and gluing them to vellum-finish paper. I built up paper supports under the front shoe to add dimension and separation. The shadows created were so beautifully captured by the photographer, don’t you think?
