The Joy of Change

Updated: Apr 15

This gouache collage was created through a multi-step process. First, I drew plants digitally. Then, I had my machine cut out every single flower and leaf for precision and cleanliness. The next step was hand-painting each one. The butterfly was painted and then hand cut. I assembled every plant together and added additional details before finally gluing down the Swallowtail Butterfly.

This piece, The Joy of Change, focuses on the beauty and possibilities that come when we seek to expand our minds and experience inner change — and it focuses on the joy and love we spread when that change is sparked.

I have felt a shift in my heart over the last five years that has led me to believe bigger things about God and has allowed me to expand my ability to love and accept and advocate for marginalized people. There has been so much beauty and joy that has come from these changes. And much like butterflies are nourished by each individual flower, I have been blessed by each person that has shared their story or shown me their authentic self and allowed me to better understand their perspective. And in the way that a butterfly spreads pollen throughout the world, I have seen my growing ability to love and care for people spread through my children and my little sphere.

Change that includes love and expanded understanding and compassion and empathy is the most beautiful gift of all.
